Review – VGoodRC Firefly 30A ARM ESC

In this post, I will be reviewing the Firefly 30A ESC  made by VGoodRC. This is a very interesting ESC as it has a 32-bit processor, dedicated gate drivers and hardware PWM output to the FETs. More information on these ESCs is available at this RCGroups thread. I would like to thank VGoodRC for developing these ESCs and offering samples and RCHyper for procuring samples for me. I got these ESCs free of charge but I will do my best to keep this review unbiased.

Helpful Multirotor Resources on the Internet

In this post I will take a look at some of the online resources that I found helpful when I was building my first quadcopter (and still find helpful today).

Websites, Blogs and Forums

  • Oscar Liang’s blog – An incredibly helpful blog. This blog has tutorials on almost every topic related to multirotors you can think of. I don’t think I would have been able to get into this hobby without it.
  • RCGroups – One of the largest RC forums out there, there are a huge number of extremely helpful and knowledgeable people who post here. Do note that this forum is massive, and threads often go into hundreds, if not thousands of pages. You are not expected to read entire threads, but it does get kind of tiring for people to have to answer the same questions again and again, so make good use of the ‘Search Forum’ and ‘Search Thread’ features. My advice is to find the threads of the products you are using/ plan to use and read through as much of them as you can and then follow them regularly. Right now, there are 14 extremely active threads that I follow religiously and several more that I follow via email subscription. These include the threads for products that I use – RCX motors, Little Bee ESCs, and the APM; firmware development – Betaflight, Raceflight, Multishot, BLHeli; as well as random threads that pique my interest like the Über Design Ü180, Turnigy Graphene, Armattan Productions etc. Some of them, like the Betaflight thread move insanely fast, and can have over 20 new pages a day.

DIY Receiver Controlled Switch

In this post, I will describe how to build a receiver controlled switch. This can be used to turn on and off various accessories on your aircraft using your transmitter. These are available off the shelf – for example this switch from Banggood or the Turnigy receiver controlled switch from HobbyKing. However, if you are like me and enjoy the DIY aspect of this hobby, you may want to attempt building one of these yourself.

The importance of the ESCs is often underestimated, but they can make a significant difference in the thrust you get from your motors, efficiency, as well as overall flight performance. This post will mostly be geared toward those building mini quads but a similar process is applicable to bigger multirotors as well.

Fix Little Bee Voltage Spikes

The FVT Little Bee ESCs, also known as the MRM Zeus, are very popular ESCs for mini quad pilots right now, and for good reason. They perform very well and at a reasonable price. However, there is one issue with these ESCs – they cause some nasty voltage spikes that can fry FPV cameras and video transmitters. I will try to explain why this issue occurs as well as how to fix it. Feel free to skip the next paragraph if you want a fix without any of the technical details.
